One of my favorite poems and the students always love it too!
Her Darling Valentine by Eric Ode
(Sing to the tune of “Clementine”)
lived a girl the age of nine.
And the label on her stable
said her horse was Valentine.
He’s her darling, he’s her darling,
he’s her darling Valentine.
Kind and clever friend forever,
and she calls him Valentine.
’Cross the prairie swept a shadow—
seven bandits in a line.
Fierce and fright’ning, fast as lightning,
come to capture Valentine.
Now the girl yelled out in anger
at the vile and vicious swine.
And she hurried, mad and worried,
to her precious Valentine.
Oh, she chased them,
and she roped them,
and she wrapped them up in twine.
And she packed them,
and she stacked them
on the back of Valentine.
As she rode them to the sheriff,
she was singing soft and fine,
“Here’s a lesson: Don’t be messin’
with my darling Valentine.
“He’s my darling, he’s my darling,
he’s my darling Valentine.
Kind and clever, and I’ll never leave
my darling Valentine.”

My Teacher Took My iPod |
by Kenn Nesbitt
My teacher took my iPod.
She said they had a rule:
I couldn’t bring it into class
or even to the school.
She said she would return it;
I’d have it back that day.
But then she tried my headphones on
and gave a click on “Play.”
She looked a little startled,
but after just awhile,
she made sure we were occupied
and cracked a wicked smile.
Her body started swaying.
Her toes began to tap.
She started grooving in her seat
and rocking to the rap.
My teacher said she changed her mind.
She thinks it’s now okay
to bring my iPod into class.
She takes it every day.

Meet the author: Patricia Polacco
No one can tell a story like Patricia Polacco! She says that she comes from a family of wonderful storytellers. "My fondest memories are of sitting around a stove or open fire, eating apples and popping corn, while listening to the old ones tell glorious stories about their homeland and the past."
Patricia Polacco was born in Lansing, Michigan. Her family is of Russian and Ukranian descent on one side and Irish descent on the other. As a child, Patricia Polacco spent the school year in Oakland, California, and her summers in Michigan. Now she is the mother of two grown children, and she still splits her time between California and Michigan. She also travels to schools and libraries, sharing her stories with children all over the country.
- Patricia Polacco uses the stories she learned from her family as inspiration for the tales she tells in her books. She also draws on the rich cultural traditions she learned from both sides of her family.
- She struggled with reading when she was a child. It was not until she was fourteen that she finally learned that she was dyslexic. She was afraid to read in front of other people but not to show them her drawings. "So when I would draw, that's when kids would get out of their seats and stand behind me and go, 'Wow, you can really draw.'"
